A wintery day met the good-sized crowd attending Vic and Shari Westphal's
annual production sale at the ranch near Grass Range, Montana on March 23.
Active bidding on the offering resulted in 92 bulls averaging $3393, 38
registered heifers averaging $1264 and 36 commercial heifers averaging
$1319.
The top selling bull was VGW Vision 009, a February 7, 2010 son of Red SSS
Oly 554T and out of a VGW Game Plan daughter. With a -1.7 BW EPD and a 0
CED, this 1225 Adj YW bull was a RAAA trait leader in WW, YW and MARB EPD
parameters. He sold at $9000 to Rosebud Reds Red Angus of Forsyth,
Montana.
Second top selling bull was VGW Navigator 010, a February 7, 2010 son of
Beckton Epic S163 K5, and out of a LCOC Road Trip daughter. A Trait leader
in MK, TM, HPG, ST and MARB, this 71# BW bull sold to Bergeland Stock Farm
of Volga, South Dakota and Sonstegard Cattle Co. LLC of Montevideo,
Minnesota at $8500.
Selling at $6500 was VGW Scout 040, a February 28, 2010 bull sired by
Beckton Warrior R667 CL out of a LCC IMF B054M daughter with a 79# BW and
a 1239 Adj 365 YW. He sold to Green Mountain Red Angus of Three Forks,
Montana.
VGW Real McCoy 053, by Halfmann MSN Statement T376, and a Lonerock
Goldstrike 262 daughter, sold at $6250 to Buster Stuber of Opheim,
Montana. He had a -1 CED, and had EDP's in the top 15% of the breed in
WW, YW, MK, TM, HPG, and CW. He had an Adj 365 YW of 1309#.
Topping the registered heifer offering were a pair of heifers that sold to
Sonstegard Cattle Co LLC of Montevide, MN. Both were daughters of Red SSS
Oly 554T. VGW 554T Indigo 1032 had a BW EPD of -6.7, and a CED of 11,
while VGW 554T Chrss 1034 had a BW EPD of -5.5 and a CED of 10. Each had
low Act BW of 52 and 56 lbs, with 205 Adj WW of 600 and 608. VGW 1034 sold
at $2000, and VGW 1032 sold for $1900. Crump Red Angus of Gillette, WY
took home VGW 7013-Queen 1029, a daughter of Basin Future Direction 7013
at $1600. She was a breed EPD leader in WW, YW and TM. Crump Red Angus
also purchased three additional registered heifers at $1500 each. These
heifers were daughters of Basin Future Direction and Basin Trend Setter.
The commercial heifers saw two drafts of three head each leave the ring at
$1500 per head. These heifers sold to Russ Gjerde Ranch of Grass Range,
MT, who also purchased nine additional heifers at $1450 per head. Gerde
was the volume buyer of commercial heifers, with Crump Red Angus volume
buyer of registered heifers. Additional volume heifer buyers were Davene
Finkbeiner of Grass Range, MT and Tom Tucek of Lewistown, MT. Volume bull
buyers were Hedman Ranch, Winnett, MT, and Monte Meredith, Custer, MT.
